"The Hunger Games" in 5 Objects

The History of New York in 50 Objects

The "New York Times" published an article about "The History of New York in 50 Objects" - 50 objects that represent what people connect with New York when they think of this city. Here you can take a look at it: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/09/02/nyregion/a-history-of-new-york-in-50-objects.html

5 Objects that represent "The Hunger Games"

We now thought that you can do the same with "The Hunger Games". In order to explain the thematic structure of the novel "The Hunger Games" everybody had to think of 5 objects that represent "The Hunger Games". The following comments show what we came up with:

  1. I would explain the thematic structure with these five objects: Bread, bow and arrow, heart, fire and grave. The bread is important because there are the Hunger games and the bread could save lives,it's an important thing in the arena and in the districts. The bow and the arrow are the weapons of Katniss and she can defend herself and Peeta with it. It's the most important thing in the book. I would say that a heart discribes the story very well because of the relation from Katniss to Peeta and Katniss to Prim, she loves them both and would fight for prim and die for Peeta.
The fire because Katniss is the girl on fire and it has an important role during the whole book. At least the grave. I think it's a good object to describe the death, because the hungergames end in death for 22 tributes...

  2. My 5 objects which describe our favorite book:

    -The death
    -Arrow and a bow
    -Fire
    -Fear
    -Manipulation

I took the death on the top, because everybody in the arena fights against the death which can be behind every tree. Everything in the book deals with the death and every tribute wants to be the last one in the woods.
Next think I took was the arrow and the bow which are the best friends of Katniss in the arena. They surved Katniss' life really often and she can hunt with those very well.
What I also chose was the fire because also at the beginning in the interviews and when Peeta and Katniss comes in the big capitol she was on fire and the other tributes called her also "The girl on fire". Fire in the woods is also important because at night it becomes very cold, but if they did a fire, they allured other fighters what can brings you your death.
Everything what they did, they must had fear, because it doesn't matter were they were, everywhere could be someone who kills them.
And I can understand this because you are alone in a forest, also at night and maybe a few meters is somebody who can kills you. I think I would die alone on a tree, only because of my fear, but I don't want to think about this. Last I took is the manipulation, which doesn't means that it is less important. Everything in the book which has to do with the games is with manipulation. Only a rain shower was made by the gamemakers and this is only a tiny point in the book. Nothing in the arena is really real, because everything is a "game" which was created by the gamemakers.

I don't know what you would choose, but I chose this five words to describe the book very close.

  3. The 5 objects which represent, in my opinion, THE HUNGER GAMES the best are:

    # mockingjay
    # bread/hunger
    # fire
    # bows & arrows
    # media

For me all those things have the same importance in the story.
The >>mockingjay<< stands for Katniss relationship to Rue, her soulmate (because she sung the four tune melody in the woods of the arena to the mockingjays which repeated it), and as a sign for not being a piece of the Capitols system. It stands for resistance and as a symbol that they can't do whatever they want with her (because when the government sent the jabberjays to spy on the rebels they turned the tables and used the birds special skills to deliver the Capitol false information).
A second important thing to mention is the >>bread<<, which is closely connected with the >>hunger<<. Both things are perseverative and present in the whole story. Bread and hunger play a big role in the lifes of the residents of each district, because they have to face the fact that they don't have enough to eat every day. Hunger is also an issue the tributes have to deal with in the arena - if they don't find food, they die.
    >>Fire<< mainly stands for Katniss as 'the girl on fire, but also for her as a light of hope for the districts residents to have a better life someday. It's a symbol for the little spark of hope in her to survive, see her loved ones again and return to her old life after the games.
Another factor to consider is Katniss' ability to hunt and to handle the >>bow and arrows<<. She can feed her family by hunting illegally in the woods out of District 12 and earns money by selling the game at the Hob. In addition, with her power she has the edge over some other tributes because she can get herself something to eat and kill their opponent within seconds by shooting an arrow at them.
My last point is the >>media<<. The Capitol uses the media to show the Districts who has the power by repeating the 'Dark Days' on TV over and over again to remind the people what happens when they try to start an uprising. They want to make sure that everyone sees the Games by arranging big screnes in the districts and making this thing such a huge media event. It's their intention to frighten the people by showing them their power and the peoples vulnerability when they reap their kids for the Hunger Games.

So these are my personal 5 things representing THE HUNGER GAMES the best.

  4. I would choose these five objects for representing "The Hunger Games":

First I would choose the Hunger Games because they are a tradition for so many years now. Also they are the main theme in the book, Katniss has to go there, Gale is yelling about them, they are important for whole Panem and so on and so on. Besides the games are an average from the Capitol to punish the people in the districts, to remind them of their force and not to do an insurgence again and to keep the people from the Capitol loving their government.

My second object is the Mockingjay. It's a sign of rebellion and hope and Katniss wears it in the arena. Everybody knows it's meaning and knows that it's a sign that the Capitol isn't perfect and does mistakes as well. I think the Mockingjay is an important symbol in the book and- if you know the following books- the beginning of Katniss' development.

Third I'd like to take violence because it's the main issue in wole Panem: the Hunger Games are full of it, there are hard punishments in the districts and the whole situation arised out of a war.

My next object are the tributes. They play a big role in Panem, are chosen every year, are a bit like stars before and during the games, are known by everybody and used as a reminder to keep out of mischief.

At least I would choose inhumanity because I think the living conditiones in the districts are unhuman. Also the difference between the Capitol and the districts, the hunger in the districts and the number of deads of starvation, the punishments by the Capitol and especially the games. 24 boys and girls should kill each other without even knowing the other tributes or having a reason. Just for fun. Just to entertain the Capitol. And the inhumanity does not even stop before little girls...

  5. Five objects for representing "The Hunger Games":

Firstly I chose cruelty because the fact that the tributes must kill each other and that the Capitol makes a show out of this is cruel and inhuman.

Next I chose hope because all the tributes have the hope to win and to stay alive and also the families hope that their children will come home.

Thirdly I chose strength because all the tributes need a strong will to stay alive and without Katniss' strength, she and Peeta wouldn't win the Games.

The fourth word I chose is fake because Katniss uses a lie to stay alive and to get more sponsors. Also the arena is a fake, for example with regard to the change of the temperatures during the nights and days.

Finally I chose identity because the tributes can lose their identity in the arena. Peeta says that he wants to die as himself and that he doesn't want to turn into a monster. He wants to be more than just a piece in the Games.

  6. 1. Mockingjay pin:
The first object I would choose to describe the story of the Hunger Games is the mockingjay pin. This pin is the thing Katniss chooses to take into the arena. It reminds her of her family and her home when she is in despair and shows her why and for whom she must win.
Furthermore this pin will be the sign of rebellion.

    2. Media
The next important thing I like to mention is the role of the media. The media represent the Capitol and the violence. Without the media the power of the Capitol wouldn’t be that big and the cruel games could not be filmed.

    3. Bow and arrows
The bow and the arrows represent Katniss’ personality because she is a fighter who never gives up. Furthermore they represent her passion to hunt and the talent to feed herself and her family and that’s the reason why she is able to win the games.

    4. Bread
In my opinion a loaf of bread is an important object, too.
    - It represents Peeta because he is the son of a baker and because he helped her by giving her the bread when she and her family were suffering of hunger.
    - After Rue’s death district 11 sent her in gratitude a loaf of bread because she decorated the girl’s corpse with flowers.
    - The bread also represents the hunger of the people in the poor districts.

    5. The lot
And last but not least the lot with Prim’s name because this was the catalyst for everything following.

I hope you like it and it would be great to her your opinions.

    1. Hi, I was really excited to find this blog. I am a huge fan of The Hunger Games and I've been looking for a blog where I can share some of my thoughts. I've thought a lot about what I would bring into the arena if I was in Katniss's position, and I completely agree with your list. I would definitely bring the lot so I would always remember why I was there. Keep up the cool blog!

    2. Hello David :)
I was very pleased when I saw that someone has commented on my post. Thank you!
I’m a fan of the book, too.
I also think it's important that Katniss has something that reminds her who she is and why she has to fight. Like Peeta said: “If I’m going to die, I want to still be me.”

  7. This are my five objects representing "The Hunger Games":

    - survive
    - hunger
    - fake
    - friendship
    - rebellion

Firstly I chose the word survive because in the arena every tribute hope and try to survive and only one tribute can win and survive.

Also I chose hunger because the tributes must hunt their food at their own and normally they famish, when no sponsor send them a box with bread.

My next word represtenting the Games is fake because all in the arena is not real, for example the fire, which chase Katniss.

Fourthly I chose friendship because Katniss find a good friend in Rue and Peeta and Katniss become friends.

Last I chose rebellion because the Capitol introduce the Hunger Games first after a rebellion. Also Katniss begin the next rebellion because she has a brooch with a Mockingjay, which is a sign of rebellion.

  8. The 5 objects that represent THE HUNGER GAMES the best are
    - poverty
    - mockingjay
    - death
    - baseness
    - hope

In my opninion poverty represents the book the best because all the people in district 12 are poor, they have no money, no food, actually they have no future. Poverty is also very widespread in the other districts. But I think, the people who are faced the most with poverty are the inhabitants of the capitol. They have money and food, but they don't have a mind or have respect for the tributes, who have to kill other human beings. No, the audience even watches the games and acclaim them.

Secondly I chose the mockingjay as an object for representing THE HUNGER GAMES because the mayor's daughter gives Katniss a mockingjay pin, which Katniss wears in the arena. The mockingjay gives also a connection to Rue, the girl from District 11 because Katniss and her use it to interact in the woods and Rue sings a melody for the mockingjays in her home when the work is over. In addition the mockingjay is a sign of rebellion.

Next I would say death because it's an often processed issue in Panem. The inhabitants are often faced with death. For example the people in District 12. Lots of the men there died in an explosion in a coal mine, many of the others die every year because they don't get food or freeze to death in winter. Another sector where death is very important is: the Hunger Games. In the area, 24 teenagers have to kill all the other ones and just one person can survive.

As the fourth object fits to my mind baseness would b the best. The whole government of Panem is a fake and the injustice between the people living in the capitol and the ones who live in the districts is too big. Also a lot of things in the hunger games are baseness. For example the fire or the mutations are things made by people, so they're a fake, just for amusing the audience.

Finally I chose hope because all the people in the different districts can just hope for a better future and especially the ones from district 12 hope that Peeta or Katniss win the Hunger Games and one of them comes back home. Similarly Peeta and Katniss both have to hope for surviving and win the games. Moreover Gale has hope to change things in the government of Panem. He doesn't want anybody to watch the hunger games so the gamemakers have to make an end with the cruelty.

  9. 5 objects I would use to describe the Hunger Games:
At first I would choose the mockingjay because it´s a symbol for the friendship between Rue and Katniss and an object which describes the love of Katniss to her friends and family. In the book a mockingjay pin was given to Katniss by Madge, a friend of her.
Then I took fire because Katniss became famous as the”girl on fire” at the opening ceremonies of the Hunger Games when she wore a dress which burned itself (actually it was drafted in the way that Katniss didn´t burn). Here I would also mention that in the arena the Gamemakers made a big fire and Katniss got an injury while she tried to escape from it.
Thirdly I chose pain. At the one hand it was a pain for Katniss to let her family alone and on the other hand Katniss got injured a few times but she never gave up the thought to come back to District 12 living.
Then I took water. Water takes a big part in the arena because Katniss was always was looking for a watersource and without it her wounds would not have become better and she would have nothing to drink. A short time before the Games started the mentor of Katniss reminded her to search for a source at first and to hunt or get to food after that.
Finally I chose the woods because Katniss does only feel save when she is in the woods with her friend Gale. In her District she always ran away into the woods when she got fear. For Katniss the woods are her source for food because she always hunts there to feed her family.

  10. 5 objects for representing "The Hunger Games"

->Firstly I took faking, because Katniss and Peeta had to fake a relationship just to get more fans and better sponsors.
->Secondly I took bread, because the real friendship between Katniss and Peeta is based on bread and in district 12 they need it to stay alive.
->Thirdly I took district 13, because the govenment showed their power to the other districts by destroying this district.
->Forth I took water, because Hamitch told Katniss and Peeta, that the most important thing in the arena is to find a water source.
->Fifth I took bow and arrows, because Katniss can hunt.
