Dear Mr. President Snow

Panem and Pink's song "Dear Mr. President" - a comparison

In the following text I will compare the song "Dear Mr. President" with Panem and it's President Snow:

"Let's pretend we're just two people and you're not better than me."

--> In her song Pink criticizes President Bush and his condescening way to treat the people. She sings, that he thinks he is, because he is the president, better than everyone else, but he's not. In relation to President Snow this criticism is justified, too. His arrogant and cold nature is a problem for whole Panem, because it makes him very powerful and hard-hearted.

"How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high?"

--> Pink wants to remind the president of all the inhumanities he didn't prevent. In relation to President Snow we can say that he didn't only didn't prevent them but triggered them.
The meaning of the second question is very clear. In relation to Panem the questions could mean, why does he arrange the Games altough he sacrifices the lifes' of 23 adolescents (and the psyche of the last one who survives) every year and why the mothers have to let their children go and watch them dying.
The people don't understand, how he can be proud of himself altough he is that cruel.

This was only a part of the song, but I think the most important paralles were named.
I hope you like it.

  1. Hi NH!
I totally agree with your arguments. And I think, there is a parallel between the first two questions of your second point, too. I'm sure that President Snow can sleep in the night because he isn't interestet in the suffer of all the people and children.

    Greetings, GW
