You don´t know nothing!
What Snow just doesn´t want to see...
A comparison of Pink´s "Dear Mr. President" and
The Hunger Games
Pink wrote "Dear Mr. President" because of George W. Bush and his policy, but it could also be sung by Katniss. The things mentioned in the songtext could be easily refered to Panem. But the big difference between Pink´s song and the book is that nobody woul ever dare saying something against the Capitol. Although Katniss could because President Snow already hates her and it wouldn´t change anything about her situation. So here I will show you the parallels between the songtext and the book.
"Dear Mr. President, come take a walk with me."
This is the first thing that would never happen, neither in Panem or in the real world. President Snow would, exactly like President Bush , never take a walk with Katniss because he thinks it´s not neccessary to hear what "outsiders" have to say because he thinks he´s better than other people what Pink also mentions in her songtext.
"I´d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly."
The next thing that is impossible to think about because President Snow would always have a plan in his backhand to make things work like wants them to, and also Katniss would never trust him because she knows this fact. Moreover he hates her and just because of that he would never be honest to her, his only aim is to destroy her life.
"What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?"
In Panem´s outside districts are so many homeless people and Snow just closes his about that and doesn´t even think about helping them or giving them a home. Furthermore he finds them annoying and just cares about what they can do to make his life better, namely their products.
"What do you feel when you look in the mirror? Are you proud?"
Of course President Snow is proud of himself because he has the shining Capitol to represent his policy. Nevertheless it is disgusting and frightening how he deals with people and I think there is nothing to be proud of while the half of your population is slowly starving to death because you don´t let them eat!
"How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?"
The president takes loved children from their families just in order to entertain the people in the Capitol with the annual Hunger Games. This is so barbarous because those families hevan´t got the chance to say goodbye to their children or stand by them while they die. He destroys families to punish them for things they haven´t done because they weren´t even born at this time, and he doesn´t care about those families. If I were him I couldn´t look at myself anymore, couldn´t walk with my " head held high ", I´d be so ashamed I guess I wouldn´t be able to look in someone others eyes ever again or look into their faces and explain to them why I do such disgusting things.
"They´re all sitting in your cells while you pave the road to hell."
I don´t think this has to be a lot explained: A chosen tribute has to go into the arena and since the chances of coming out again are so small, a tribute is almost already dead before it goes in.
"You don´t know knothing ´bout hard work!"
Snow sits in his more than comfortable Capitol the whole day, only thinking about how he can punish his population in the outside districts in more brutal ways. He has no imagination about the work that has to be done for his comfort. He has never been into a mine or harvested anything. So no wonder people hate him and want him to be punished for his treatment on them.
"You´d never take a walk with me."
Snow is a coward. He wouldn´t be brave enough to let himself be critizised. And as long as he doesn´t change something, no one other can. So, Mr. Snow, you´d never take a walk with Katniss. Would you?
Hey CD!
ReplyDeleteI liked your comparison pretty much. You made it very detailed. Moreover you went into details about President Snow and interpreted every important line.
Also I liked your point of view because it’s almost the same as mine.
I hope I will read more of you!
