My reading experience
When we first talked about reading a book in English class I wasn't that excited, remembering the last years one. So when we got the book and I saw how many pages I had to read I couldn't bring myself to do it. I love books, but never thought of english ones because of the much unknown vocabulary so that was another reason to delay the reading.
But when I finally started, I couldn't stop anymore: The story was so gripping! The vocabulary thing went smoothly, because our teacher gave us an addition with the most important words for each chapter, the rest I could search for on the internet. Reading english books or looking at songlyrics and for their translation is so much more effective than just sitting at home with your school book for learning vocabulary, because if you look up a word you think more of remembering it because you don't want to stop and look for it the next time. You really know what reason to learn these vocabularies for: If you want to understand the story, don't forget the words.
When I finished, I felt proud. Having read and understood the whole business was a big advance: I learned new vocabulary and expressions, succeeded in forcing myself to do this. I have no real strategies for reading, but if you don't understand something, don't stop! If you haven’t done yet, maybe later. Just go on reading.
What I particularly liked about the book was that Katniss critizes the Capitol by showing them that they do not own her and her silent protest against the government. Another interesting part I think is how the Capitol uses his power to frighten the people and put them under pressure by organizing the Hunger Games. I really would like to talk about that fact in class!
The most admirable thing for me is Katniss' will to survive for her family, mainly her sister. There is nothing more important for her than the people she loves and the really really small chance to see them again in District 12. She fights with the aim of returning to her old life.
